BriSCA F1 Stock Cars World Championship Qualifier BriSCA F2 Stock Cars 1300 Saloon Stocks "Gold Roof" Final |
|
After some doubts about the weather, I finally got to the Saddlebow Road stadium to see the stadium packed out to see the BriSCA F1's return along with more fun with the F2's and the 1300 Saloons. The latest "improvement" was a catch fence, though I still managed to end the night covered in shale! Never let it be said that the racing at Kings Lynn did not involve the spectators!

This has to be one of the few times that I have seen the BriSCA F1 Stocks in action, and any description of these V8 behemoths was understated as they roared around the shaleway. Just as with the F2's in the first meeting, the F1 drivers were impressed with the oval surface and provided racing to prove it. The first heat was curtailed close to the end as Mick Preston got into trouble, Charlie Yarrow picking up his first win of the night, his second coming in the Grand National qualifier at the end of the meeting. This pattern was repeated in the second heat when concern for Dave Nicholls' predicament saw a declared result in favour of Steve Smith. The consolation managed to go the distance, however, and turned into a big three way battle toward the end, Les Spencer just managing to squeeze out his rivals. The final became an easy win for Phil Wheelton, shaking off Smith then making good his escape through the back markers. It was good to see so many F1's turn out, with over 50 in attendance, but just as good to see was a good turn out for the F2's who shadowed the F1 races through the meeting. |

The night, as far as the F2's were concerned, belonged to a heat and final performance by Stuart Finnikin. Finnikin finished well ahead of the scrap that kept Allen Cooper away from getting further up than second in the first heat while Mark Taylor notched another one up after a good first meeting performance in a last quarter charge. Another first meeting success, Jamie Baguley, strolled home a winner in the consolation before Finnikin returned. His final win was hard won, his last lap scrap with Andy Ford almost costing him first place, long time leader Dave Feary watching for his own chance in third. Taylor did it again in the Grand National qualifier, though Daz Kitson tried his utmost to catch up, just too late to get past second place Dave Tomlinson. |
|
Then, of course, we had the 1300's. These showed up well in their three race setup, Wally Walden just about getting home in the first race after some back marker problems slowed him a little toward the last corner, while Steve Footer shut out the competition, notably Carl Nicholls, in the second heat. Nicholls, however, got the better of everyone in the final with a few squabbles down the field including a safari trip by Dave Winsor and Mark Crisp on the home straight. |
