Kings Lynn (Norfolk Arena) (Trackstar)
BriSCA F2 Stock Cars World Championship Qualifier 2l Saloon Stocks Bangerstox |
It had been two years since the shaleway at Kings Lynn had seen any stock car or banger action, and back then it had its faults. The April 3 meeting changed all that when Trackstar reopened the circuit with a BriSCA F2 World Qualifier with support from the 2l Saloons and the Bangerstox. About half way in the Freestones tried the caravan flattening bit and Lester did make it inside the caravan though I'm given to believe that it has been done more successfully before this, and we also had fireworks. The evening did not pass without problems, though, as the commentator had to borrow a mike from the attending KLFM Radio folk to finish the meeting as his own batteries ran out two or so events short of the end and some of the fireworks accidentally went off at the end of the F2 final, but on the whole it was a great meeting with both drivers and spectators keen on the turnout of this track. |
Certainly Jamie Baguley (9) thought so when he was interviewed after the first F2 heat which he took by half a lap, and of Matt Chesterton (853) who came home first in the second heat ahead of Bert Finnikin (559). It was quite a surprise for me, therefore, that so many well known names in F2's had to squeeze in from the consolation behind (86). The final looked like it would be a showdown between Chesterton and Finnikin until the closing few laps when Mark Taylor (790) took the lead inside as Chesterton was hooked on Finnikin and the pair danced around the pit bend. Dave Tomlinson (885) took the Grand National qualifier under pressure, though not as much as Mick Sworder (152) who was spun across the line in fourth.

The Saloon Stocks had a similar time of it, Diggy Smith (116) charging up to second in the first heat before leader Darren Barnett (512) conked out and left Diggy in possession of the first win, though Barnett managed to keep it together in the second heat by some distance. The final was dogged by false starts but it eventually got going with Kevin Shinn (121) moving up fast from the back to add to his wins for the year, Smith having to settle for tenth when he caught Paul Liquorice (51) on the nose by Saddlebow Road. |
| Chris Lowe (7) had probably the best time as he picked up a heat and final double in the Bangerstox, his first win in the first heat which saw some big hitting on the pit turn while Geoff Pallett (567) took the other heat. Lowe hit the front early in the final just before Kevin Mills (121) two point roll on the back straight brought the reds out. With almost all the white tops out of the restart, Lowe had an easy time getting to the front in the restart, stretching his lead to almost half a lap by the time the race was stopped again and declared due to a driver in trouble on turn three. |

With all the track closures and cutbacks over the last few years, it is always good to hear of one that is reopening, and despite the problems that caused the postponement of this reopening, the Kings Lynn shaleway was approved by all (I'm still spitting bits of it out even now!) and the facilities and racing should make this a good venue for years to come, something which can only be good for the sport. Good luck to everyone there; I shall return!
