Mildenhall Raceway (RDC)
Meeting 00/04, Friday, 21st. April 2000
National Bangers Suffolk Team Open
Ministox

A fine day greeted the punters and the drivers as Mildenhall Raceway hosted its Suffolk Team Championship meeting on Good Friday, April 21 with 24 teams turned out from various promotions and tracks from as far away as Ringwood, the Swindon Vigilantes turning up to remind folks that RDC has only just given up promoting there while much was being made of the pending reopening of Coombe Valley Raceway, many a Kentish driver already making plans.

As usual, the teams were split into groups, though this year the groups were mixed into six heats so that each got three races which meant that until you got to race six, you could only make guesses at who would go through to the six team final. Twisted Metal from Group A scored big in the first heat with ex-British Champion Pete Lewis (35) grabbing ten of the fourteen points in a fairly roddy first race, though the team would score only one more point that day and went out of the fight half way through the afternoon. Another early big scorer were the Looney Tunes with Mick South (89) grabbing ten for them in heat two, though the Dongs did better with fifteen points from Gary Magdwick (33) and Gary Turner (72) going third and fourth in that race, while the wrecking action started to pick up, Wayne Quinn (82) mixing it up for the Dongs with Mervyn Jones (556) of Bad News. Former holders the Wolf Gang picked up in heat three after a disappointing first heat, Ricky Wolf (4) and Vince Wolf (8) grabbing a massive 17 points, though this was the best of their performances that day with the team dropping out by one point at the end. The big surprise of that race, however, was late entry (24) who seemed determined to see how much punishment a Mk.II Fiesta would take before conking out. The answer, more than anyone - including Marcus Ballard (214) presumably, when he tried to squash the tiny Ford - expected! Business as usual in heat four as Andy Davies (147) picked ten up for the Condoms as the pinkies from Kent tried to push the teams on two fronts this year. As Twisted Metal faded, so the Management picked up with a fourteen point haul, courtesy of a win from Lee Saunders (349) and a seventh, which gave them a one point advantage over the Wolf Gang who could only muster five points from Dave Palmer (53), while Matt Frost (249) was having fun by the start line, including a hit on Dover traveller Ian Horton (202) whose Nuts were up for nine points, their best on the day but well short of the needed target. Ballard (214) grabbed ten in the final heat for the Dream team, but far too late as Dave Vincent (22), Paul Totham (287) and Karl Totham (61) grabbed 21 points to put Coaties Crashers through as first pick for the final, Billy King (49) picking nine up to scrape the Condoms in, ninth spot for Paul Bowen (557) enough to comfotably slide Damage Inc. in, with the Management, the Dongs and the Young Guns also going through.

A quick non-qualifier Accumulator qualifier round went to Chris Krockett (414) after he had participated in the summary wrecking of Andy Burbridge (120) along with Colin Lambert (165), then into the main event. And this was the crunch as the Condoms were totally undone, a jacking for Mark Ruskin (32) being the start of a big time squishing for the pinkies, especially when Carl "Stop Calling Me Jack" Overy (617) decided that pink was his least liked colour and first jacked Shane Davies (158) out of it, then mounted Billy King (49) neatly on one of the wall panels on the back straight before steaming Ruskin big time in the side, even grabbing a bit of the old man, Steve Davies (77) before the late entered Davies flamed up spectacularly as the nose of the car nesteld in the side of Luke Parfitt's (541) dead fence sitter to bring the race to an end. Stephen Spall (64) and Kevin Utting (548) were at the front as the reds fell, contributing to a thirty point haul that saw the Trackstar regulars comfortably home as the Suffolk Team Champions for 2000, Coaties Crashers following eight points behind. With all else dispensed with, the remaining fifty or so cars took up sides at either end of the raceway and pummelled themselves silly, the final trophy falling to Sonny Sherwood (348) as he killed off his last challenge, Dave Vincent (22).

A massive Ministox turnout on a contact raceway meant that things could get heavy for the Juniors, as indeed they did in heat one, Mark Couzins (311) eating home straight fencepostin an awkward spot to bring a hard fought race to an end early, Steve Jode (418) grabbing the win from Danny Sanderson (360) and Jamie Unitt (272), Unitt picking third up again in the more orthodox finish of the second heat, Nick Tandy (128) cruising through from the back for the win here ahead of Chris Bradbury (86), the final being mixed up as Steve Laybourn (527) collected traffic which gave Steve Willis (66) a chance to pick up the final win and Unitt his third third place of the day!
