Report

* The Rookie Bangers take the place of the Bob Kitchener Memorial for National Bangers which will now take place on May 10.

Rookie Bangers
A reasonable turnout for the Rookie Bangers At Arena Essex on Sunday, May 3 produced two notable smashes, one at either end of the ciruit in the first race, David Bull left crumpled by the pit bend and Bill Crittenden caught fire after hitting the pile up. William Burnell was left as a comfortable winner ahead of Tony Chilvers. Former ministox driver Jamie McAngus managed to take a win in the second heat in a three car finish that saw much of the field wiped out in crashes around the circuit including a number of attacks on the immaculately turned out Sy Collins effort that eventually left the car dead across turn three and a magnet for anyone that was being assisted to the fence. McAngus took the win as previous leader Mark Ruskin took a wrong turn a few laps out, colliding with some of the pit bend debris. The final seemed to get under way well enough until Scott Gingell rolled over on turn two, causing a complete restart. McAngus took another easy victory, though he was non-commital about coming out for the DD despite prodding by the meeting commentator, Rob Porter. That event went to Brad Etheridge in a well attended and, as ever, heavy hitting session.

SuperBangers
A determined effort eventually paid off in the SuperBangers as Brian Jarvis notched up a win in the May 3 SuperBangers meeting over double heat winner Mark Riches.

A midrace spin by Paul Hunter in the first heat held up the high grade drivers on the pit bend, allowing Riches an easy victory ahead of Steve Davies. Hunter had spun in the dropped contents of Paul Foreman's engine in the previous lap, though this only claimed a couple of drivers in all. Riches won the second race too, but he had to work had for the win, Davies coming through to challenge along with Jarvis after Roger Trickett thought he had a clear shot at the win, the last laps hotly contested. The race had started with a spin on turn one that took Dave Carroll down and out of the race along with Bernie French. It was close to three wins out of three in the final but Jarvis managed to get up close to Riches with a few laps to go, then pushed Riches wide on the last but one bend to grab the lead, Chris Trickett up to challenge for second but a fraction too late.

1300cc Stock Cars
The May 3 meeting also included action from the 1300cc Stock Cars, which was dominated by a heat and final double for Phil Wise, the other heat going the way of Scott Hughes who won the first heat but failed to finish any other race. The meeting also featured a number of crashes including what seemed to be a rising feud between former Banger driver Joey Palmer and ex Ministox champion Dan Melluish which, after tit for tat knocks throughout the first heat, eventually ended in the Tavern wall when Palmer picked Melluish up and ran in.

Ministox
There were wins for Georgie Lee in the first heat, Ray Petty in the second and a final win for Jack Deacon. Lee had a chance in the second heat but was unable to hold out against Petty and Stephen Hackett, and was run onto the safety area by a poorly judged corner from rookie driver Samuel Dace in the final.
