Report

BriSCA F2 Stock Cars
Current National Points champion Chris Bradbury of Winnersh took the 2009 British Championship title for the BriSCA F2 Stock Cars on April 26 at Arena Essex in a meeting that saw a triple win for Adam Rubery in his heats.

Rubery took a comfortable victory in the first heat, running easily ahead in the early stages while most of the competition scrapped over the lower places. The second heat, however, was far closer when Bradbury managed to catch long time leader Ashley Rundle to take the lead and the win in the final lap, passing on the pit bend. Rubery took a somewhat more violent third heat which was interrupted midway after Neil Hooper collided and locked up on Darren Lammas on the exit to the pit bend. Chris Burgoyne chased hard but was about a car's length short of catching the leader by the end of the race. As with the second race, the fourth was a close finish. Rundle looked like he was going to repeat his performance from heat two, as did Bradbury, but Nick Rogers pulled past Rundle early on and was into back markers by the end of the race, slowing Bradbury up enough that he was unable to catch up in time. Race five saw Rubery manage to win his third trophy of the day, a closing stage clash between Burgoyne and Arena veteran Chris Roots giving him enough time to get to the finish line. Race six was very heavy with its contact, the first waved yellow coming out when Daz Kitson and Kelvin Whalley hooked up after a four way pile up on the bridge bend inside and the second caused as Rogers found his outside front wheel collapsing, leaving most of the wheel loose on the circuit. The eventual closing stages had Matt Stoneman well ahead, with Steve Green chasing. The triple win ensured that Rubery was on pole and, though he took full advantage of it, he was destined to hit the wall early in the championship final, leaving Bradbury clear in front for the remainder of the race, Green trying in vain to catch up while Burgoyne moved up in third spot.

Heritage F2 Stock Cars
The Heritage F2 Stock Car, based on the Junior Stock Car of the 1960s, made a welcome visit to the Arena Essex Raceway for the BriSCA F2 British Championship meeting, re-staging the 1965 running of the event. This time, however, it was won by Mike Walmsley in a close finish in the final laps with Dave Barber.

Walmsley, who later mentioned to track commentator Rob Porter that his son was racing the other car and that he was so glad that he had beaten his son, managed to hold on for the win in the event as he carefully picked through the field to catch early leader Barber, who let Walmsley through on the pit bend to give himself an opportunity to tap Walmsley out at the next turn. The hit, when it came, was far too tame and Walmsley pulled into the last lap as firm leader. Barber had it better in the second race as he streaked away with the win, most of the real competition being for second place which eventually went to Mick Whittle ahead of Dave Wycherly. Whittle got through the traffic a lot quicker in the last race, overcoming Barber to easily win, Barber staying ahead of Stuart Silman.

Outlaw Hot Rods
It was a normal day out for the Outlaw Hot Rods at the April 26 Arena Essex meeting, but it was a day when the BMW Mini special, run by Richard Simmons, would eventually show its pace.

Stu Hammond had an easy flag-to-flag victory in the first heat, having drawn second pole on the grid, while Phillip Young had a close scrap with Greg Moore in the early laps before pulling into second, Trevor Ward grabbing third around the midway point. Young had pole on the second heat and made good use of it, holding Simmons off to take a flag to flag victory that guaranteed him pole in the final while Moore resumed his battle with Ward for third, though Moore held on this time. Young must have thought he had the final all sewn up until Simmons finally overcame Hammond mid race then grabbed the lead away from Young with laps to spare, treating the spectators to "doughnuts" at the end.
