In Brief

A hot day for all at Arena Essex as the Ladies lined up for their final qualifier before their September 9 final, kicking off the meeting with another win for Amanda Harris who grabbed the win inside the last few hundred yards - Sue Davis sacrificed her late lead in a doomed spin out attempt on a back marker - only to blow her engine big time as she crossed the line. A petulant kick to the front of the car indicated what she thought of that, but it meant that she took no further part in the meeting, not to mention that the marshalls then had the dubious task of cleaning the oil up along the home straight. Jo Keeling grabbed second and Tricia Walmer (sp?) took third.

It was doubles time in the Plastengrave Banger round, and though brother Gary had the more interesting car, Mark Deacon would emerge with a heat and final double to dominate this round which also saw a win for Richard Day in the other heat and Andy Crawford in the consolation. Wrecking wasn't particularly heavy until the Rawlins qualifier which was taken by Matt Fuller before Jason Jackson took on the field and narrowly won the quest to stay alive against everything that John Harris and teammate Paul Hunter, amongst others, could throw at him.

As for the Group A Hot Rods, one could be forgiven for believing that some of the action was lifted from the Bangers with a number of wrecks in the heats including a big pile up in the first heat that started with the prone spinner on the pit bend in the form of Ian Hefferman. He was unable to budge before the race reached him in the form of the two Collins cars. Mick Collins managed to hammer the damage out before the next outing, but this was only the start of the mounting list of cars that suffered during the day. However the meeting also had its brilliant side, including a hotly fought final that saw Tony Moss grab victory within yards of its end in a thrilling six-way battle, a double win for Dave Lamb including a great dodge through the traffic to take the lead after the restart of the first race and a win for Steve Smith in the other heat, Smith and Lamb both getting involved in the scramble for the trophy in the final.
