Lightning Rods
The first round of the Arena Essex Supreme Championship qualifiers took place on April 23 and while Nick Langley and Darren Ahern bashed their way to a stewards warning in second and third place respectively in race one, new boy Dave Halford eased his way home to victory with no real problems. It was a day for new winners with another debut driver at the Purfleet track, Matt Arnold, grabbed the second heat by inches from Shaun Mayle in a last corner dive for the line. Just to show that all was not front runner wins, Ahern grabbed what little grip was available on the outside line to take heat three, with Dennis Whiteman making a return to the formula and getting second spot. However Ahern had been spotted jumping the start in heat three, and though the steward gave him the benefit of the doubt in that heat, Ahern repeated the act in the final and was docked his first position in favour of Dave Meningen, who had just nicked his second spot on the line from Steve Holding on the last bend.

SuperBangers
The SuperBangers started late into the April 23 meeting at Arena Essex, and Terry Shelvey managed to grab a heat win as Kevin King ran out of time in his run to the front, then Shelvey also picked up the second sprint heat, nicking inside Roy Laybourn close to home. Laybourn got a degree of revenge, however, when he picked up the meeting ending final race, just holding Shelvey off.

Group A Hot Rods
The Group A Hot Rods shared a Supreme meeting at Arena Essex on April 23, starting with the breaking of John Hendy's long standing 20 lap record for the circuit by Mark Browne, turning in a time of 5:44 in his first heat win with Dean White in tow, Kevin Downs distantly third. Steve Mills also pushed hard in the second heat for a win over Terry Bearman, another of the old school that seems to be doing much better of late. Jim Richards seemed a certain winner in the consolation until he slowed on his last lap, his car seemingly spent as he desperately cruised home to get sixth and a spot in the final as a consolation for dominating the race up until then, Tony Moss getting the win. Indeed, in the final, it seemed a close thing between Richards and Browne at the start, but neither were to finish, Dean White improving on his heat place to win ahead of Mark Cook while a close race for third saw Dave Devine just muscle through. A turn two pile up meant a restart in the last helter skelter race, Browne taking control by half way and never looking back to the end, Darren Clement taking second spot.
