Meeting No. 16, Sunday, 7th. June, 1998
PRI Banger Teams Championship Round 3 1300 Stock Cars Supreme Championship Qualifying Round 2 Ministox |
|
Ministox
Another three races for the Ministox at Arena Essex on June
7 started with a heat win for visitor Sam Mallett who took to
the fast quarter mile track well, burning off the chasing
pack easily leaving Neal Gardiner in second and birthday boy
Tom Meekings third. The second heat saw a big bunch build up
behind early leader James Avison. This led to a pile up on
the pit bend which took many cars out of the running but gave
a big advantage to the high grades, Alistair Pizzey making
the best move to get through to the lead from where he would
not be caught, while Simon Welton had his best place of the
day, holding onto second despite pressure from driver's
championship leader Dave Devine in the closing stages. Tubbs
Butler ended the race loading up in a disappointing
performance which was capped when he ignored the black flag.
Heat and final wins seem to be the norm this year, and
Mallett showed how he liked the circuit by providing another
one in a stalled final which came to a stop half way after a
pile up on the Aveley bend which left him on the front of a
restart ahead of Danny Cassar, Ian Thorndyke and Vic Bilkey,
three drivers who eventually dropped behind concerted drives
from Devine and Pizzey who took second and third
respectively, Devine outpacing Pizzey as Pizzey tried to
overtake Bilkey on turn four. The turnout had been good, and
the racing excellent, seemingly the non-contact rule becoming
popular with many drivers.
1300 Stock Cars
An interesting meeting to debut on, but Mitchell Terry chose
the June 7 Supreme Qualifier at Arena Essex to make his
switch from junior Ministox to 1300 Stock Cars, and made it
well into the bargain. The first race, a warm up, was a
little slippy due to pre-meeting rain but Terry handled it
well, leading for most of the race and even tried to come
back as he was passed by eventual winner Derek Mortimer
inside the last five laps. Terry kept hold of second ahead of
recent in form driver Dave Edwards while some confusion
reigned as Chris Whiteman locked up side-by-side with Steve
Davies to cross the line for eighth, the eventual decision
going to Davies. In a magnanimous gesture, Terry was taken on
the victory lap with Mortimer and, though this was to be
Terry's best finish of the day, he showed a lot of promise
for the future in each of the races that followed. In fact,
he was looking at third place in the main event until he was
hit on the last corner by Mark Thompson which pulled Terry
down the places to sixth and left Thompson dead in the armco.
At the front, Andrew Palmer had taken first place after a
determined charge from the back, recent dominant driver Derry
Monk unable to catch him with the last corner incident
putting Mortimer up to third behind Monk. The race also saw
some interesting ideas on hitting as Shane Davies, already
black flagged for an earlier incident, pinned Kev Wood then
Phil Wise jacked Davies. Wise escaped with a black flag of
his own, but Shane Davies had a load up to add to his woes,
one of many load up penalties given out that day for ignoring
black flags across all three racing formulas. Palmer then
went on to repeat himself by winning the helter skelter race
with Mark Browne chasing hard in second and Dave Collin third
after a heated contest over the lead between Browne, Collin,
Palmer and Monk. The 1300 Stock Cars are back for the 1998
Festival of Speed on the 20th June.
PRI Banger Teams
With one round to go before the final eliminator, the top
few teams were secure, especially the Suicide Squad with
their return to form in the second round. June 7 at Arena
Essex the last chance to clinch the final places and there
were a few surprises in store, not least for the winner of
the first race, Mark Jones or Team Don't Know, who had been
trying to win something for five years and chose that moment
to finally do it. Graham Linfield got second place for the
Cowboys and Kev Wilsher got third, six of eight points which
gave the Squad joint lead with Don't Know after the first
race. Things didn't all go Don't Knows' way however as Mick
Bradbury of the Black & Whites flew into Mark Want,
Bradbury breaking his dizzy cap. The second heat was stalled
after a triple car pile up including a rollover on turn two
looked dicey. The roller was a one point effort by Phillip
Morrison of the Menace, with fellow Menace Andy Jordan and
Black & White Chris Worthington jammed in underneath. As
the reds fell, John Harding ended his day with a load up for
a full chat jacking for Rabbit Wayne Prayle which destroyed
the back axle. Stuart Wilson had also been hit in and took no
further part in the meeting. The race restarted and Ian
Greatrex tried to regain his lead from before the stoppage
for the the Don't Knows but the BMW of Darren Graves was that
bit quicker, the B Team driver getting his teams' first ever
win ahead of Ant Hill Mob George Rowbotham and Bernie
Allcock. The third heat went the way of the Cowboys with
first place ahead of Menace Kev Elmore and Roger Trickett of
the Elite, Mark Price of the Outlaws giving this race its
hitting credentials. The consolation was won by a plastic
beer mug. The story related to me was that winning driver
Bradbury, having broken the distributor cap in his hit on
Want in the first heat, had dashed across to the Tunnel
Estate Halfords to get a replacement only to find that they
had not got a suitable replacement in stock. Drowning his
sorrows in a mug of beer, Bradbury realised that the glass
that he was drinking from was just the right size to replace
the cap, so with a little modification, he came out and won
the consolation! Another unlikely repair in the consolation
was Wayne Prayle who had managed to reconstruct his back end,
though he may wonder why he bothered as he was taken out of
the running with a head on from Squad driver Buster Woods, an
ex-teammate. Another surprise was that, thanks to eleven
points gained from three finishing cars, the Southend Menace
held the lead after three heats and a consolation! They
scored no more than that though as the final saw all the
Menace go out directly or indirectly as a result of a home
straight pile up, which left the team out of the final
eliminator by ten points. This pile up took out most of the
field during the race, the wrecked cars hiding people such as
Allcock who took out Graves with a full chat jacking. Only
six cars actually finished the final, with Brian McGuiness
holding on ahead of Dave Barwick for his second final win out
of the three rounds for the Squad. However Trickett's third
place for the Elite meant that the win was not the cap of
another successful day for the Squad, with the Elite taking
the day ahead of the Canvey Cowboys, the Suicide Squad ending
the day in third.
Overall, the teams that will qualify overall for the final eliminator on July 26 are; Suicide Squad, Cream Team, Vange Destroyers, Ant Hill Mob, Team Don't Know, Canvey Cowboys, Nads, The Elite.
The twice restarted Rawlins 2000 qualifier was stalled first by a sliding one point roll by first heat winner Jones, then again by a head on by Chris Clark on Steve Witherington which left Witherington in trouble. Kevin Prayle started the third start attempt with a nutting for Sean Collin to finish off his well abused and somewhat crabby car, the final blows from Wilsher and McGuiness making sure. Mark Chilvers led most of the way but was shoved off close to the end by eventual winner Andy Burrough in a three car finish, Chilvers taking second ahead of Ian Knight. Burrough then turned and headed Knight, both cars expiring on the spot to leave the last car award for Chilvers.
